*Queen Latifah has just been added to the star-studded cast of Lifetime’s all-black remake of “Steel Magnolias.”

She’ll play M’Lynn, the character portrayed by Sally Field in the 1989 feature film of the same name.

Condola Rashad will play her diabetes-stricken daughter, Shelby, played previously by Julia Roberts, and Rashad’s mother Phylicia will take on the role of Clairee, portrayed by Olympia Dukakis. Alfre Woodard will portray the irascible Ouiser, in Shirley MacLaine’s former role, Jill Scott will fill Dolly Parton’s shoes as understanding hairdresser Truvy, and “Pariah” breakout Adepero Oduye will play insecure newcomer Annelle, made famous by Daryl Hannah.

“The caliber of talent associated with this film is astounding,” said Nancy Dubuc, President and General Manager of Lifetime Networks. “Queen Latifah, Phylicia, Alfre, Jill, Adepero, and Condola are some of the most celebrated women in music, film, television and stage — and we could not be more thrilled and honored for them to bring Robert Harling’s poignant story about the strength of women to a whole new generation.”

Latifah will also executive produce the project alongside Smash‘s Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, with whom she worked during his Oscar-nominated turn in 2003′s Chicago. Kenny Leon, who directed Phylicia Rashad in 2004 Broadway production A Raisin in the Sun, will direct.

While the original film took place in Georgia and production on the update begins next month in Atlanta, the film itself will take place in Louisiana. Very few details have been released about how the “contemporary” update will revise the original material but network heads are projecting a premiere later this year.

Previews begin March 31 at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. Directed by Michael Wilson, it is scheduled for a limited 14-week engagement, with official opening set for April 23.

While the play — including its television and film incarnations — traditionally has been performed with such actresses as Lillian Gish, Geraldine Page and Lois Smith in the central role of Carrie Watts, this production casts the woman and her family as African American characters.

A best supporting actor Oscar winner for “Jerry Maguire,” Gooding will make his professional stage debut in the production. He will next be seen onscreen in Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete Kills” and Lee Daniels’ “The Butler.”

Williams, who is coming off of ABC’s “666 Park Avenue,” counts among her previous Broadway credits the musicals “Into the Woods,” “Kiss of the Spider Woman” and “Sondheim on Sondheim.”

Rashad (the daughter of veteran actress Phylicia Rashad) first turned heads Off Broadway in Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer-winning drama Ruined. She earned a Tony nomination this year for her Broadway debut in Lydia R. Diamond’s Stick Fly and was recently featured in Lifetime’s African American remake of “Steel Magnolias.”

*The Broadway production of Horton Foote’s The Trip to Bountiful, which was scheduled to begin previews March 31 at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, will now do so March 30, one day earlier than originally announced, reports Playbill.

The cast will feature Emmy winner Cicely Tyson, Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding Jr., Emmy Award nominee Vanessa Williams and Tony Award nominee Condola Rashad.

Directed by Michael Wilson and produced by Nelle Nugent, the 14-week limited engagement will officially open April 23.

The Trip to Bountiful, according to press notes, tells the story of “Carrie Watts (Tyson), an elderly woman who dreams of returning to her small hometown of Bountiful, TX one last time, against the wishes of her overprotective son (Gooding) and domineering daughter-in-law (Williams). Her journey becomes a heartbreaking but ultimately life-affirming and inspiring tale that examines the fragility of memory and celebrates the enduring power of hope and faith.”

“The Trip to Bountiful is among Horton’s most beloved plays, and Carrie Watts, one of his most memorable characters. To do the play and role justice, you need an actress of rare stature and command,” added director Wilson. “Cicely Tyson has, over the span of a distinguished career, depicted iconic Americans engaged in immense struggle. Her legendary performances – from Jane Pittman to Coretta Scott King to Harriet Tubman, to name just a few — have contributed mightily to our sense of national identity and character. I am thrilled that she is returning to the stage now to have her trip, to lead us all on a journey that promises to be unforgettable.”

*Angela Bassett, in theaters later this month with “Olympus Has Fallen,” could’ve also returned to Broadway later this month opposite the legendary Cicely Tyson in The Trip to Bountiful.

As previously reported, Cuba Gooding Jr., Vanessa Williams, Condola Rashad and Tom Wopat co-star in the revival directed by Michael Wilson and set to begin a 14-week limited engagement at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Tuesday, April 23. (Previews begin Saturday, March 30.)

The story centers on Carrie Watts (Tyson), who lives in a cramped Houston apartment with her mild-mannered son (Gooding Jr.) and his opinionated wife (Williams), dreaming of a return to her home in the small Gulf Coast town of Bountiful, where she grew up and raised her family. Feeling like an imposition and chafing under her daughter-in-law’s watchful eye, she steals away with her latest pension check and heads home in the journey of a lifetime.

Bassett, who has twin 7-year-olds with actor-hubby Courtney B. Vance, was originally asked to play Carrie’s outspoken daughter-in-law, but scheduling conflicts forced her to turn down the role, “which I probably will regret one day because of course [Cicely Tyson] is one of my sheroes,” Bassett told us during interviews for “Olympus Has Fallen” in New York. “I consider her like a mentor, a mother figure in terms of actress to actress, but I just couldn’t make it work.”

Below, Bassett explains what she was doing at the time that prevented her from taking the role.

“Olympus Has Fallen” opens nationwide on March 22. Bassett plays the Secret Service Director during a terrorist attack on Washington D.C. Watch the trailer below.

romeo and juliet*Tony Award nominee Condola Rashad will star opposite Orlando Bloom in a new Broadway run of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, but this time the bitter divide between the Montagues and Capulets will be underscored by their different ethnicities.

Five-time Tony nominee David Leveaux will direct the staging, also set to feature Jayne Houdyshell (Follies) as Juliet’s Nurse, and Joe Morton (Raisin) as her father, Lord Capulet, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The production will begin previews August 24 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, with official opening set for Sept. 19. Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy was last presented on Broadway in 1977.

The new version will unfold in a modern setting, but will retain the text’s original language.

“Shakespeare did not only write of his world – he imagined ours,” said Leveaux. “The very improbability that two young people might, through their imaginations and their courage, change the world by overcoming the cynical tyranny of division handed down to them by their elders, is the best and happily most improbable reason I can imagine to bring this story to the Broadway stage today.”

The production was originally schedule for a 14-week limited engagement through July 7, but it has now received a second extension to close on October 9.

Due to Rashad signing on to do another Broadway play, a new adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet” that begins previews August 24, she was unable to stay on board for the extension.

Trip to Bountiful*Wow.

The all-black stage production of “The Trip to Bountiful” will soon be a Lifetime TV movie.

Surely, there can be nothing more “heady” for an actor than being sought to reprise the role she so fully embodied onstage, in another medium: TV.

Such is the case for actors Cicely Tyson and Vanessa Williams as per a notice published on Backstage.com. In the play, Tyson stars as Carrie Watts, an elderly woman with dreams of returning to her childhood home and Williams co-stars as the bossy daughter-in-law that constantly tries to stop her.

The plot of the play goes like this:

Set in the 1940s, the play tells the story of an elderly woman, Carrie Watts, who wants to return home to the small town where she grew up, but is frequently stopped from leaving Houston, Texas by her daughter-in-law, and an overprotective son who won’t let her travel alone. However, old Mrs. Watts is determined to outwit her son and bossy daughter-in-law, and sets out to catch a train, only to find that trains don’t go to Bountiful anymore. She eventually boards a bus to a town near her childhood home. On the journey, she befriends a girl traveling alone and reminisces about her younger years and grieves for her lost relatives. Her son and daughter-in-law eventually track her down, with the help of the local police force. However, Mrs. Watts is determined. The local sheriff, moved by her yearning to visit her girlhood home, offers to drive her out to what remains of Bountiful. The village is deserted, and the few remaining houses are derelict. Mrs. Watts is moved to tears as she surveys her father’s land and the remains of the family home. Her son eventually turns up, and drives her back to Houston.

The Trip to Bountiful cast also included Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Condola Rashad; yet ironically, both of these actors dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Rashad (eventually replaced by Adepero Oduye) took the co-starring role in the Broadway production of Romeo and Juliet with Orlando Bloom; and Gooding, Jr. who made his Broadway debut here, went on to another gig as well. He was later replaced by Leon Addison Brown.

This revival of the play was directed by Michael Wilson.

No word on whether any of the revival’s original (or replacement) cast will transition to the Lifetime movie adaptation as well; but casting is currently underway and shooting is set to take place in Atlanta, GA throughout the month of November.

The Trip to Bountiful first debuted in 1953 and starred Lillian Gish as Carrie Watts.

Carrie Watts (Tyson) begrudgingly lives with her busy, overprotective son, Ludie (Underwood) and her snooty daughter-in-law, Jessie Mae (Williams). No longer able to drive and forbidden to travel alone, she wishes for freedom from the confines of the house and begs her son to take her on a visit to her hometown of Bountiful. When he refuses, Mrs. Watts is undeterred and makes an escape to the local bus station, where she befriends Thelma (Palmer), a young woman traveling home. When Ludie and Jessie Mae discover she is gone, they call in law enforcement to help, but Mrs. Watts is one step ahead of them and convinces the local sheriff to help her on her journey home to Bountiful.

The Trip to Bountiful closed its triumphant Broadway run on October 9.
